Midsummer Fallen Leaves
By Bing Hua
Edited by Michael Escoubas & William Marr
When I drove past a small street today,
I saw leaves drifting down profusely, like rain.
Then I realized, they were all very sad.
They had been used to a lush life,
Living aloft on the green trees.
They had no desire to come down.
Outside of my glass window,
one after another the leaves swept by.
I don’t know why, but in no time,
I tasted the salty sting of bitter tears.
Each leaf must experience
the up and down in life.
Today’s distress is that life
does not always go according to plan,
like the leaves which usually fall
in autumn, we too, sometimes fall,
in the heat of a summer day.
Oh,
I present a poem to these poor leaves
But unexpectedly
My very self turns out to be the recipient
