OAKLAND — A 45-year-old Virginia man in the Bay Area for a job interview at Google was robbed and shot to death Sunday night in downtown Oakland after a dental appointment, police said. The dentist was not hurt.
Jing Hong Kang, who authorities said is a computer engineer from Fairfax, Va., and the father of three children, had just finished having his teeth cleaned in preparation for Monday's job interview at the Internet giant, authorities said.
"We were saddened to hear the news. Our hearts go out to Jing Hong Kang's family in this difficult time," Google officials said.
The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1900 block of Webster Street outside the building where the dentist's office is located. Authorities said Kang had arrived in San Francisco on Sunday evening, checked into a Peninsula hotel, then drove to Oakland in a rental car to meet with a dentist he knew for the teeth cleaning. He had a return flight booked for Monday night.
The two left the building after the appointment. Kang had gotten into his rental car and the dentist was outside the vehicle when two robbers approached and demanded money, Sgt. Mike Gantt said.
Kang appeared to have been robbed of some items before being shot. Gantt said police are not sure why he was shot.
Nothing was taken from the dentist, authorities said.
The robbers fled on foot, and Kang was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Kang and the dentist, whose name police are withholding, knew each other through church. It's not clear whether it is a church in the Bay Area or Virginia.
The killing was Oakland's 48th homicide of the year. Last year at this time, there were 62 homicides in the city.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering as much as $20,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killers. Anyone with information can call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211.
