Midsummer Fallen Leaves
By Rose Lu (Bing hua) Tr. East Sea Fairy
When I drove on a short lane
Today
I saw fallen leaves drifting profusely, just like the falling rain
Then I realized, and saw
They were sad one and all
Having been used to a lushly green life
Aloft in the tree
They grudge drifting down really
Outside of my glass window, one after another leaves sweep past
I don’t know why my eyes rain a flood of tears
And in no time on the corner of my mouth something salty and bitter appears
Each leave has to experience up and down
No one is particular enough to shun
Today’s distress is that
They don’t fall in autumn in which they are due to pass away
But in heat of this summer day
Oh, to these poor leaves' young fatality
A poem I present
But unexpectedly
My very self turn out to be the recipient
