Cell Phone Functions Hz"FGwd
'T|EwrS j
Claim:   E-mail lists five little-known but useful functions associated with cell phones. iR!]&Oh

Status:   Multiple — see below. hD[r6c

Example:   [Collected via e-mail, February 2007] t#VX#dJ

Origins:  /9A6"Z

The message reproduced above is (with one exception) a compendium of topics we've already covered in separate articles, so we'll just provide a brief summary for each entry with a pointer to a more detailed explanation: ["#H/L]3
R,s}<N$
1. Calling 112 on your cell phone will (in some parts of the world, primarily Europe) connect you to local emergency services, even if you are outside your provider's service area (i.e., even if you are not authorized to relay signals through the cell tower that handles your call), and many cell phones allow the user to place 112 calls even if the phone lacks a SIM card or its keypad is locked. However, the 112 number does not have (as is sometimes claimed) special properties that enable callers to use it in areas where all cellular signals are blocked (or otherwise unavailable). UcKVL zKs
va:<W H
2. Cars with remote keyless entry (RKE) systems cannot be unlocked by relaying a key fob transmitter signal via a cellular telephone. RKE systems and cell phones utilize different types of signals and transmit them at different frequencies. lWn}afI
l;r A}?,.^
3. The claim that pressing the sequence *3370# will unleash "hidden battery power" in a cell phone seems to be a misunderstanding of an option available on some brands of cell phone (such as Nokia) for Half Rate Codec, which provides about 30% more talk time on a battery charge at the expense of lower sound quality. However, this option is enabled by pressing the sequence *#4720# — the sequence *3370# actually enables Enhanced Full Rate Codec, which provides better sound quality at the expense of shorter battery life. Cw"[$E'J
T/.UMw
4. Entering the sequence *#06# into a cell phone may display a 15-digit identification string, but that function only works with some types of cell phones, and the efficacy of reporting the ID number to a cellular service provider to head off unauthorized use of a lost or stolen phone is limited. i6f42]Jy
=A*a9c2
5. Some business outfits such as (800) FREE-411 do provide free directory assistance services to cell phone customers. However, users should note that the service is "free" in the sense that FREE-411 provides directory information to callers at no charge, but cellular service providers may still assess charges related to placing such calls. 0 @um

The spate of bombings and attempted bombings in the London Underground in July 2005 have left many commuters and those who care about them feeling anxious and at risk. One way we as humans struggle to overcome  the discomfiting sensations of helplessness and disquiet is to search for something, anything, that restores so much as the smallest part of our usual sense of control over events. We are used to believing we are in charge of our own lives, so we cast about desparately for that which will return things to what we see as their proper state of our directing, or at least influencing, our outcomes. ^eyVEN
$P#x>#+[A
The seemingly helpful heads up about connecting to emergency services via using an alternate phone number when deep in the subway system is part of that search, in that it gives the appearance of being information those traveling in risky circumstances could put to use. However, it's all a chimera: while the need to feel safe once again (or at least capable of being quickly rescued) is real, the intelligence about an alternate phone number that will always work is not. ]R>NmjAI
$f _C~O
The global mobile emergency number, 112, is "special" in the sense that (unlike other local emergency numbers, such as 999) it will use any tower your mobile phone can contact to complete the call, regardless of whether or not your phone is authorized to relay signals through that tower. However, the 112 number has no special properties that enable callers to use it in areas where all cellular signals are blocked (or otherwise unavailable). Mobile phones do not work in many parts of the London Underground, and satellite signals cannot reach there either. While dialing 112 or 999 will put you through to emergency services in Britain when your mobile has signal, such calls will not go through when your unit does not. Many sections of the London Underground are far too deep for satellite signal to penetrate; in those areas, calls to neither 112 nor 999 will connect. Sa%%3_&
]l C2YD}
More succinctly, when there's not enough signal with which to make a call to 999, there will not be enough to make one to 112. .jg@UAK
7M _ mR Vh
London Transport and mobile firms are warning people about the e-mail quoted above, saying it contains inaccurate safety information. xY/F)JOeG
"This e-mail is incorrect. The 112 number does link people through to 999, but it only works if you have a signal on your mobile phone. If you have no signal bars on your phone, it will not work," a spokesperson from London Transport said. .zl[nx[9"D
mr/?w0(C
"It will not divert to a satellite signal." nW*cqM%+
QVJpX;u
"Even with a satellite mobile phone (which very few people have), you would need to have a clear line-of-sight to the satellite. You would have to be outside, not in a building or a tube tunnel." *N4/M%1P
The "helpful" advisory about dialing 112 is not the first bit of e-mailed misinformation to arise from the London bombings. A useful suggestion that the cell-enabled store an "in case of emergency" (I.C.E.) contact number in their units attracted a hoax that warned against doing so lest such entry leave users' phones open to theft of their prepaid minutes. We cover both the emergency contact brainchild and the hoax that followed it on our page about the push to get cell users to store I.C.E. numbers in their phones. ^pH8'^n

Remote Possibility
Claim:  Any car equipped with a remote keyless entry system can be unlocked via cell phone. :N_]*>
_tX=xAO9
StatusFalse. ^\Z+Xq1~/
Axns
Example:  [Collected on the Internet, 2004] ~-6_-Y|
eUZk|be
Origins akt7rnt?i
vpf.0!zh
Many  new cars now come equipped with "Remote Keyless Entry" (or "Keyless Remote" or "Keyless Entry" or "Remote Entry") systems (also known as RKE systems), a mechanism which allows automobile owners to lock and unlock their car doors remotely (from up to about 300 feet away) by pressing buttons on transmitting devices small enough to be carried on keychains. RKE systems are handy for a number of reasons: they enable drivers to unlock car doors without having to fumble around for keys (a great advantage in darkness, during inclement weather, and when one's hands are full), they enable car owners to give someone else access to their vehicles without having to hand over ignition keys, and they provide a means by which motorists can open their cars to retrieve keys that have been locked inside. 8C8S) ;
m7y[Y
But what if you accidentally lock your remote entry device in your car along with your keys? (A plausible scenario, as many people carry them together on the same keyring.) If you own a car equipped with a system such as OnStar you can contact an operator and have OnStar unlock your vehicle remotely through a signal sent via a cellular network, but otherwise you have to call a locksmith or get a friend or relative to bring an extra set of keys out to you. $pAJ$0=sw
A.("jb@I
Enter the idea of the poor man's OnStar. No need to pay for a fancy car-unlocking service: just use a cell phone to call someone who has access GC7WRA
to your spare RKE device and tell him to point it at the phone and press the "UNLOCK" button. You simultaneously point the cell phone at your car door, and voilà — you're in! A nifty solution . . . at least it would be if it weren't implausible for most standard remote entry systems. J9!/C#Fm
.#bf9JOE
Relaying remote entry system signals via telephone might work if the signals were sound-based, but they're not. An RKE system transmits an encrypted data stream to a receiver inside the automobile via an RF (radio frequency) signal, a signal that can't be effectively relayed via cell phone. (In any event, RKE systems and cell phones typically operate on completely different frequencies; the former in the 300 MHz range and the latter in the 800 MHz range.) 7 s{vou
&z1U0uk
(More than a few people have inadvertently fooled themselves into believing the cell phone method of unlocking car doors actually works because they tried it and achieved the desired results — not realizing their cars were still within range of their keyless remote devices, and the signals that unlocked the doors were transmitted the usual way [i.e., through the air], not via cellular phone connections.) ,dTmI{@O
[tof+0Y6
It's possible this method might work with cars that use something different than standard RKE systems, but it doesn't work with the vast majority of models. $A9Pi"/*z
5 ,-8oEUL
As a recent purchaser of a new vehicle equipped with an RKE system, I've found that it has reduced the likelihood of my locking my keys in the car in an unexpected way: Since I quickly became accustomed to always locking and unlocking the car with the RKE device, and I carry the RKE device on the same ring as my keys, I have to be standing outside the vehicle with my keys in my hand in order to lock it. Now if I only had something to keep me from losing my cell phone . . . P{UV3ZA%

Cell Phone Security
Claim:  Pressing a sequence of keys on your cell phone will produce a serial number that can be used to disable it in case of theft. \ m~?yq8H
uStAZ ~b\
StatusPartially true. .7^(~&5N
=oSd M 2
Example:  [Collected on the Internet, 2005] \\<=J[R.M
Na/Y1RW
Origins:  One of the drawbacks to a world of increasingly prevalent electronic communications and financial transactions is that it has created new (and c**&,aL
sometimes easier) forms of crime. The thief who snatches a purse no longer ends up with just a bag and a few dollars in change and currency — he may also make off with credit cards he can use to purchase other expensive goodies, an ATM card he can use to drain money from bank accounts (if he can obtain the PIN), and a cell phone on which he can rack up hundreds (maybe even thousands) of dollars in free calls. zq{UkoME
w'(/dr
Fortunately, it's also getting easier to detect and disable fraudulent account activity, and in many cases regulations limit the amounts consumers can be held liable for due to theft (once they've notified the proper agencies). Still, somebody eventually ends up paying for stolen goods and services — if not the consumer, then banks, retailers, or service providers can get stuck with the losses. The message quoted above purportedly offers some tips on how to cut down the incidence of one of these types of theft, stolen cell phones. WM ?a1j
&N/t%q
Given the plethora of cell phone manufacturers and service providers in the world, it's difficult to make any statement about cell phones that applies across the board, or that remains valid for long since cellular technology is continually evolving. In general, we note that: *"8Ls0!
Entering  the sequence * # 0 6 # on your cell phone's keypad may produce a display showing a unique fifteen-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) string. However, this only works with phones that use the Global System Mobile Communications (GSM) standard, as these phones contain a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card that holds users' subscription information and phonebook information. Not all cellular phone service carriers use GSM technology, so entering the * # 0 6 # sequence will not work with every cell phone. `L`+`B
4)8VmCW
Should your cell phone be stolen, you may be able to report its IMEI to your service provider and have the phone flagged as invalid to prevent the thief from using it with a different wireless number or carrier, but again, the availability of this option varies depending upon which cellular provider is involved. If your cell phone is stolen or lost, the far more important action for you to undertake is to contact your cellular provider to have your account disabled so that nobody else can apply charges to it, and to make such a report you need not know your phone's IMEI. 8^ f:-5
A couple of aspects of this message are also misleading or wrong: I* C~w
If your cell phone is stolen, service providers will not generally require you to sign a new service contract. You may have to pay for a new handset, but if you are, say, twenty-two months into a two-year contract, you will not have to sign a new contract — you'll be only obligated for the two months' worth of service remaining on your original contract. rMxIujx
g) oOravV
Although there is a small black market for stolen handsets, cell phone theft is overwhelmingly a theft of service — thieves don't really want your handset (cell phones are so cheap and ubiquitous that hot phones aren't worth much); they want to use your wireless service to make free calls and stick you with the bill. Since reporting your stolen handset's phone number to your service provider already cuts off a thief's ability to charge calls to your account, reporting the serial number and having the handset disabled as well is largely superfluous. It certainly won't hurt anything to take the extra step, but doing so isn't likely to pose much of a deterrent to cell phone thieves. K#wA ;
Unfortunately, what cell phone thieves primarily take advantage of is the time lag between their stealing your phone and your noticing the loss and reporting it to your service provider (and, in some cases, your service provider's delay in disabling the account), during which they can largely make as many phone calls as they want for free, with little fear of being caught. As long as these windows of opportunity exist, thieves will continue to pilfer cell phones, whether or not they can re-use or re-sell them afterwards. Pn">fWRCx

Free 411
Claim:  The phone number 1-800-FREE-411 offers free directory assistance service. #4'wF4DR@
pd'0|
Status True. ~U]g;u
{'O><4
Origins:  One of the many changes that has taken place in the telephone industry in the last few decades is that while phone companies once generally provided their local customers with a'i Q("
}UW7py!TN
free directory assistance (via the 411 phone number), in most cases telephone customers are now charged a fee (typically $1.00 or more) for each directory assistance call. Despite the charges, U.S. consumers continue to avail themselves of the 411 directory assistance service, placing about 6 billion such calls per year. $~G,T g
0 jth} \9
Now, however, an outfit called Jingle Networks is providing an alternative directory assistance service — and it's free. Users who call the toll-free number 1-800-FREE411 (or 1-800-373-3411) can navigate a nifty automated voice recognition system that asks for a location (city and state), type of listing (business, government, or residential), and name. Once the service has located an entry for the requested number, it reads the information aloud and offers the caller the option of connecting to the number by pressing a single number on his telephone keypad. g^]Iw~T6$
j HHWq>=d
How can Free-411 afford to offer free directory assistance service? It works sort of like commercial radio or television — businesses pay to sponsor it in exchange for presenting their advertisements to customers. The funding of Free-411 is typically explained thusly: qLDj\%~(
The service is made possible by thousands of national and local businesses who sponsor this service with brief valuable audio advertisements that are played to callers who request businesses in their yellow pages category. This advertising model allows businesses to acquire new customers over the phone, cost effectively, with little or no risk. Meanwhile callers get free directory assistance, potentially saving each of them thousand of dollars per year. ={:a N)
The way it works in practice is that a caller who requests a business number is first presented with a short (about 12 seconds) audio advertisement for a sponsor who operates a competing business in that area; the caller is then given the option of being connected to either that competitor or the business he originally requested. If no sponsor operates a local competing business, then the caller hears no advertisement at all. (In the latter case, if the caller accepts the option to connect to the desired number, the business receiving the call hears a short message at the beginning advising them that the call was placed via Free-411, and a Free-411 salesman may follow up with them a few days later to solicit them as a potential advertiser.) Note that although Free-411 provides its service for free, users are still subject to any charges associated with making calls that may be imposed by their cellular service providers. `uMEK>b
2H |:/y
(Cell phone users concerned that taking advantage of the free directory assistance service will entail potentially giving out their cell phone numbers to telemarketers should note that federal law already prohibits certain types of telemarketing calls from being placed to cell phones, and all phone users can block telemarketing calls by listing their numbers with the national Do Not Call registry.) ]5Uuz?:e
|NfFe*q0;8
We made three separate trial calls to 1-800-FREE411 asking for information on different local businesses, and in each case the voice recognition system smoothly processed all our spoken information and correctly identified the businesses of interest. In only one trial out of the three were we presented with an audio advertisement. LW]fme<V?
