The artist formerly known as Sporty Spice has turned up again, this time as "serious artist" Melanie C. Unfortunately, along with her loss of spice, Melanie has lost some savor. Album-opener "Go!" tries its best to cast a spell over listeners that will cause them to forget all about the group that bankrolled Sporty's closet full of streetwear. But besides the fact that even if we wanted to we couldn't possibly forget the Spice Girls, the synth-heavy song isn't inspiring enough to induce Spicenesia, in any case.

Which doesn't mean that Melanie has forgotten one of the primary tenets those Spice Queens learned from their patron saint of silliness, Cindy Lauper, i.e., "girls just wanna have fun." Fortunately, as the puerile rocker "Goin' Down" and the dance-pop number "I Turn to You" demonstrate, Melanie C. hasn't pulled a complete image overhaul a la Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell.

If you'll recall, Sporty was the Spice Girl rumored to be a decent singer. Not that it really matters, because in today's pop productions, spunk has it all over skill. But when sporty push comes to sporty shove it turns out that Melanie C. is a little deficient in the verve department. On the spare, mellow R&B song "Never the Same Again" Melanie is trumped by the Minnie Mouse flow of TLC's Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. In fact, despite the upbeat feel exuded by many of the songs, the bubbling effervescence of the Spice Girls' best work ("Spice Up Your Life") is lacking from the proceedings.

Getting trapped in a kind of never-never land between the serious and the silly is a perennial hazard for former teen idols. And who knows, someday Melanie C. may escape that awkward in-between stage. For the time being, she's made an album that's neither an embarrassment nor a triumph.
