　　《蜗居》喻指都市白领们困顿的生活状态，讲述了在房价飙升的年代，人们对房子的渴望以及房奴生活的辛酸。剧中海青饰演的海萍与苏淳就是典型的房奴代表，他们原本是一对再普通不过的白领小夫妻，但居无定所，面对天价房款，他们发觉“攒钱的速度永远赶不上房价上涨的速度”，小夫妻的贫困和渺小，以及大城市带给他们的压力和迷乱，让他们“买一套房子”的愿望，变作一副沉重的多米诺骨牌，引发了一连串连锁反应。海萍不知不觉中成为悍妇，丈夫为赚辛苦钱险些背负罪名。在现实的蹂躏下，爱情变得如此苦涩。

　　“居者有其屋”，对于大部分靠自己打拼的“80后”来说仍是遥不可及的一个梦，海萍的遭遇道出了许多70后80后们的心声。现实生活中，许多年轻人在追求幸福生活的道路上，像海萍一样负重前行，大学毕业，努力工作，拼命攒钱却还是买不起房。另一方面，一些观众对海萍“要房子不要妹妹”的做法很不齿，认为海萍一方面享受着海藻成为职业“小三”带来的胜利成果，一方面又教育海藻这样做不对，是“踩着妹妹的身体过日子”的女人。

　　剧中争议最大的人物是妹妹海藻及成功人士宋思明。海藻在目睹姐姐因为房子而遭受的不幸后，选择了走捷径。在知道自己的恋人小贝无法给予她物质上的满足之后，她开始劈腿市长秘书宋思明。这个成功男人可以让她轻松得到姐姐为之奋斗半生的房子，即使做二奶，即使放弃真爱她也在所不惜。在这部剧中，精神与物质，爱情与面包之间的选择是引人深思的话题。虽然海藻不幸成为第三者，但观众对海藻充满同情，认为她不是天生爱慕虚荣，当她说出“人情债，肉偿了”的时候，心底更多的是无奈。
