The following poem is written by JARED SMITH. Four of his poems will be translated into Chinese and published in both English and Chinese in our next paper journal.

Inside an Open Home

A woman passes back and forth before the windows,

the light as dark inside as out this time of day,

her hands holding stones of bright colors and inks.

I am a long way from her, sitting by the fire reading.

There is a woven rug across the floor, an old sofa,

an expanse of polished maple, a small table, empty chairs,

and the reflection of her silhouette against a lone aspen

grown up close against the memories we planted.

She is talking to herself, perhaps not knowing I am here.

I have returned from the doctor’s office not long ago,

and I am immersed in shadows with a good book.

The following poem is written by FORTIER, MARDELLE. Four of his poems will be translated into Chinese and published in both English and Chinese in our next journal.

Another Look at Gray

I did not always

appreciate gray

One day I came upon a pond

in a silence beyond silence

Drab gray ice

reflected pearls from the sky

glistened beyond measure

j

I did not always

appreciate broken

In the still pond

lay a battered tree

brown and crooked

The branches shone

as though rubbed by a million hands

I stared at the shining

beyond Tiffany glass

Each limb looked polished

to a high gloss

Every inch of my world gleamed

with a mysterious glow

as if something from deep down

had come into the light

No earthly weddings, no teas with a queen

in sight

Only silence beyond silence

Some mirrors of celestial milk

Some rebirth of summer dreams

silk beyond silk

This poem is written by ANTHONY HAYES (pen name NED NUTKINS). It will be translated into Chinese and published in both Chinese and English in our next issue.

The Misty Poet (based on one of the Ménglóng Shīrén)

September sears the central plain

picking out the paddy fields,

where he waits, spade in hand

as rice planters bob

and step backwards in time

with each other.

At the toll, he wheels

a laden barrow to the edge,

ending a journey

at the pock-marked hill.

Remembrances forgotten,

he shovels with a swish

only gravediggers sing.

A song that can take him

out, beyond the grave,

onto mountains that reply

to the thunderflash,

by blossoms blessed

with waterfall splash.

And he'll overturn a government

poster for parchment,

crush berries for ink.

A flick of horsehair

for a brush

that once dipped,

will paint a script of paper lanterns

hung amongst

the conifer trees.

By day, he buries his memories

with the dead.

By night, the poet

watches from the door

yearning to see their spirits rise.
